Usage

Use the drop-shadow-{amount} utilities alongside the filter utility to add a drop shadow to an element.

  1. <div class="filter drop-shadow-lg ...">
  2. <!-- ... -->
  3. </div>

Responsive

To control an element’s drop shadow at a specific breakpoint, add a {screen}: prefix to any existing drop-shadow utility. For example, use md:drop-shadow-xl to apply the drop-shadow-xl utility at only medium screen sizes and above.

  1. <div class="filter drop-shadow-md md:drop-shadow-xl ...">
  2. <!-- ... -->
  3. </div>

Customizing

You can customize which drop-shadow utilities are generated using the dropShadow key in the theme section of your tailwind.config.js file.

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. theme: {
  4. + extend: {
  5. + dropShadow: {
  6. + '3xl': '0 35px 35px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.25)',
  7. + }
  8. + }
  9. }
  10. }

Learn more about customizing the default theme in the theme customization documentation.

Variants

By default, only responsive variants are generated for drop-shadow utilities.

You can control which variants are generated for the drop-shadow utilities by modifying the dropShadow property in the variants section of your tailwind.config.js file.

For example, this config will also generate hover and focus variants:

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. variants: {
  4. extend: {
  5. // ...
  6. + dropShadow: ['hover', 'focus'],
  7. }
  8. }
  9. }

Disabling

If you don’t plan to use the drop-shadow utilities in your project, you can disable them entirely by setting the dropShadow property to false in the corePlugins section of your config file:

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. corePlugins: {
  4. // ...
  5. + dropShadow: false,
  6. }
  7. }
